THE BUSINESS SECTORS

The ABLF Awards 2011 is a showcase of excellence in the three key drivers of global economy.

Industry and the benefits of industrial production form a part of a wider modernization process, where social change and economic development are closely related with technological innovation. Since wealth in the developed countries paralleled industrial growth, Asia too experienced an industrial revolution of its own during the last two decades. As a result, Asia contributed 45 percent to the world's manufacturing output in 2009-2010. With the region's developing nations contributing 25 percent and industrialised nations contributing 20 percent, the possibility of Asia surpassing the Western foothold in the industrial sector appears real.

Infrastructure, which plays an important role in supporting growth and poverty reduction, has often been held responsible for hindering Asia's potential for excellence. While some developing Asian countries have far better infrastructure than others, overall, the region remains below the world average in terms of both its quantity and quality. It is estimated that Asian countries will need to spend more than US$ 600 billion per annum for new development required in various infrastructure areas.

Energy and its equitable access are inextricably linked to economic growth. Asia's energy demand is expected to double by 2035. This has assumed greater importance in the face of Asia being the biggest producer and consumer of energy and the interplay of politics in the energy market. The pressure to shift from carbon-intensive development patterns to 'green' and sustainable growth is gaining pace, with resultant emphasis on alternative forms of energy. In addition to intensifying tapping into the traditional sources of energy, Asia is also setting the benchmark for responsible growth by exploring renewable forms of energy.

The ABLF Awards 2011 felicitated the stalwarts of these three key business sectors and also celebrated their foresight and dedication to transform dreams into reality.
